Looks like Apple might ditch encryption in the UK. British security folks have reportedly told Apple to set up a “back door” so they can access all the stuff users upload to the cloud, no matter where they are. This demand could really mess with Apple’s promises about keeping customer data safe. Some sources say Apple might just stop offering encrypted storage in the UK instead of going along with the request.
Apple hasn’t said anything yet outside of their usual business hours. The Home Office has sent Apple a technical capability notice, which would require them to give access to the data in question. But a spokesperson from the Home Office wouldn’t confirm or deny if that notice exists.
Back in January, the UK kicked off an investigation into the operating systems of Apple and Google, along with their app stores and browsers. This ongoing scrutiny shows the growing tension between big tech companies and governments over privacy and security issues.
