A low pressure system is expected over the sea, dropping temperatures to 4 degrees Celsius

The Meteorological Department has announced that three to five cold waves are likely to strike different parts of the country in January. The authorities also said that the minimum temperature this month may fall to 4 degrees Celsius.

This information was released in the long-range weather forecast for January on Thursday, January 2.

The Meteorological Department has announced that one to two moderate (6-8°C) to severe (4-6°C) cold waves are likely to occur in the western, northern and northeastern parts of the country in January, and two to three mild cold waves are likely to occur. The rest of the country is likely to experience (10-8°C) to moderate (6-8°C) cold waves. In addition, one to two low pressure systems are likely to form in the southern Bay of Bengal this month, one of which may develop into a depression. On the other hand, precipitation in the country in January may be less than average. Also, daytime and nighttime temperatures may be higher than average this month. However, the Meteorological Agency also announced that people may feel colder due to the small temperature difference between daytime and nighttime.

Moderate to dense fog may occur in the northern, northeastern, western, southwestern, central and riverine regions of the country, while light to moderate fog may occur in other regions. Dense fog may continue until noon in some places. Additionally, dense fog may cause temporary disruptions to air traffic, inland waterways and road traffic, but the Meteorological Agency said major rivers in the country may see normal water flows.
