The American accessory manufacturer wants to make battery replacement for AirTags unnecessary for new devices. The TimeCapsule costs $20.
The American company Elevationlab has unveiled a rather unusual accessory for AirTags. With the case-sized TimeCapsule, owners of small Apple devices can significantly extend their battery life. The manufacturer promises that AirTags will last up to 10 years without needing to replace the battery. The TimeCapsule is opened before use to insert the AirTag and two AA batteries, and is said to be completely waterproof when closed. Only the top half of the AirTag with this technology is placed on a corresponding interface similar to a CR2032 battery. No metal base is required. The manufacturer promises that using AA batteries increases the energy capacity by 14 times. The TimeCapsule costs $20. It remains to be seen whether AA batteries can actually hold a charge that long.
Accessory Drawbacks
The downside to the accessory solution is that AirTags take up quite a bit of space. Anyone using them with a TimeCapsule in a motorhome or boat, as Elevationlab cites as an example, will no doubt be fine with them. For bags, the situation varies greatly depending on the space situation. For some purposes, devices with expansion features are no longer recommended.
It is said that the inspiration for this product was a stolen camera bag. Imagine the inventor of TimeCapsule trying to find an AirTag in his pocket, only to discover that its battery, which lasts an average of one year, had died three months ago and that he had forgotten to replace it. TimeCapsule aims to solve the problem, but it raises the question of whether it is just postponing the problem. At the very least, AirTags warn repeatedly and very urgently to replace the battery, so it is unlikely that too few warnings were the cause of forgetting to replace the AirTag’s battery. At the end of the battery’s life, it will function even less.
