Only 1 in 10 desktop graphics cards are made by AMD

AMD and Nvidia are bucking seasonal trends and selling fewer graphics cards. This hits AMD especially hard.

Interest in graphics cards for desktop PCs appears to be unusually low. Only 8.1 million GeForce and Radeon models were sold from July to the end of September 2024, down 9 percent year-on-year and 15 percent quarter-on-quarter. Market researcher Jon Peddie Research (JPR) made this estimate. This decline is unusual, as third-quarter sales are typically seasonal. JPR did not provide any reasons for this. However, the upcoming launch of Nvidia’s new generation GeForce RTX 5000 and AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 could have an impact. At least some players are waiting to switch until the new graphics cards are available.

AMD Continues to Lose Market Share

Meanwhile, AMD has lost much of its market share, dropping from 17% to just 10% in less than a year. This means that only about 810,000 Radeon GPUs for desktop PCs were sold in the third quarter. In contrast, there were 7.3 million GeForce graphics cards.

In the same period, 20.1 million desktop PCs were reportedly sold. Most of them do not have discrete graphics cards, and in many cases they are purely office computers.

This is reflected in AMD’s business figures. The gaming division has been in the black lately with sales of $462 million USD. This includes Radeon graphics cards as well as chips for consoles such as the Playstation 5 (Pro) and Xbox Series X. /S included. Nvidia’s financial reports come asynchronously with calendar quarters, and over the past two fiscal quarters, its GeForce graphics cards have brought in about $3.3 billion and $2.9 billion in revenue, respectively..
