Mint Covid Tracker: India’s coronavirus curve flattens slightly as country goes into lockdown

Updated: 20 Apr 2020

  • Kerala, Maharashtra, and Punjab have seen the biggest spikes in confirmed cases over the past 24 hours
  • UP presently has 6,000 isolation beds and their number will soon be increased to over 12,000

As India moves to a complete lockdown to contain Covid-19, the number of confirmed cases in India have risen by 57 to 539 over the past 24 hours, the latest data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) shows. This is a slower increase compared to what it was in the previous 24-hour-period (67 cases).

Yet, it is still too early to celebrate given that India is still very close to the trajectory of the US, which is quickly emerging as the new Covid-19 hotspot. India’s case count has doubled over the past five days. If this trajectory continues, the number of cases could shoot up to a thousand cases by the end of this week.
